Frequently Asked Questions:
How did Equi-Spirit Toys™ come about being designed?
“We believe very strongly in the importance of play in a horse’s emotional and physical well being,” Says Equi-Spirit™ creator, Lisa Ross-Williams. “But our horses were literally going through various balls in a matter of a few minutes. Our horse Riley seemed on mission to pop whatever inflated toy he could, either by biting them or laying on them,” says Lisa. “We became committed to finding a horse play ball that could hold up, but there were none on the market that could offer any durability. So we located a raw material supplier, and created Equi-spirit™. We found other people were having the same durability issues, so it was a hit!”
What makes the Equi-Spirit™ toys so durable? What types of “abuse” can these toys take before they would break?
They are extremely durable because they are made with a heavy duty inner bladder which is then covered by either a nylon or poly-fabric cover. These balls are the only horse balls on the market which can hold up to the rigors of free-play. Horses can pick them up without damaging the bladder and can even withstand those funny horses who enjoy laying on them; even our 2500 pound Percheron, Elvis.
The greatest danger is sharp objects such as pointed branches, large thorns and of course, barbed wire. The great benefit is if they do receive a minor puncture, the bladder can be repaired using a standard vinyl repair kit.
Why is playing so vital to horses?
Horses are very perceptive and curious creatures. Standing around all day and night becomes very boring and unsettling. Having nothing to do to occupy his mind, the horse turns to "vices" to relieve his boredom and eventually these behaviors become a habit. Horses love to play, a good session of playing will raise their spirits and allow their physical bodies to stretch and get stronger. When a horse moves, the blood from the lower legs is pumped back through the body to the heart by the hooves, tendons and muscles. In order to have strong, healthy feet and legs, motion and play is needed. The movement also stretches and strengthens the muscles and joints in the entire body. Furthermore, this activity also promotes healthy gut activity, helping to cut down on chances of impaction colic.
What does playing with the Equi-Spirit toys™ teach my horse?
The balls can be used for free-play which encourages exercise and stimulates the horse’s minds as well as their bodies. Free-play allows the horse to naturally learn to use his body without the interference of the human. They learn self-collection, suppleness, flying and simple leads changes, concentration and focus. This then prepares them for disciplines such as dressage, barrel racing, cow working, etc.
Can I play with my horse too?
The toys can be used for ground games, teaching both horse and human focus and timing. They can also be used for mounted games including equine soccer, a growing trend. Mounted exercises can promote horse and rider working together by putting principle to purpose. Equi-Spirit toys™ are also currently used by a number of clinicians at their demonstrations and events. David Lichman, a 5-Star Parelli instructor, uses his Equi-spirit ball for this purpose. The complete line of Equi-spirit toys and tools™, including the extra durable balls can also be used by teachers and trainers, individual horse owners and care-givers. They are great horse training balls.

Equine Soccer! Let the Games Begin.
Equine Soccer™ is a great training method to promote horse and rider working together using concentration and focus while having fun.
Once a basic foundation and communication are in place, Equine Soccer™ helps put principle to purpose, allowing horse and human to work as a team. The following suggested rules are just guidelines and this training task can be tailored to suit your individual needs and training level.
The only hard fast rules are:
1. Large, durable ball such as the Equi-Spirit™ 40”
2. Field and Goal markers. We suggest traffic cones which are soft and safe such as our Equi-Spirit™ Rainbow Cone Set
3. Set-up the playing field. This can be an inside or outside arena or even a level, safe pasture.
Once a basic foundation and communication are in place, Equine Soccer™ helps put principle to purpose, allowing horse and human to work as a team. The following suggested rules are just guidelines and this training task can be tailored to suit your individual needs and training level.
The only hard fast rules are:
- BE SAFE. Don’t let competitiveness over-ride safety.
- HAVE FUN! Don’t get too serious-laughter is your best friend.

- Size depends on your need and availability; however 75’ by 150’ is ideal.
- Goals are placed at each end; width depending on needs and experience of players. 12’ wide for advanced teams, up to 25’ wide for newbies.
- PLAYERS. The number of horse/rider players is up to you. It can be just one against one or up to eight on each team. If playing with multiple riders/horses, often one goal keeper for each team is used. DURATION. Again, this is up to your individual needs. Consider: 20 minute game with (2) 10 minute halves 30 minute game with (2) 15 minute halves Ensure you schedule a short break between halves for rest, water and strategy planning Ball can be moved by the horse pushing with his nose or foot or kicked by the rider. STARTING THE GAME. Ball is placed center field and initiated at that point. UPON SCORING, the non-scoring team will be given possession in front of their goal. Once they pass the half-way field mark, play begins.
- OUT OF BOUNDS. If ball goes out of bounds, it is thrown in by an unmounted person or referee.
- Ensure your horse has a good foundation of training before playing. Remember, you are putting principle to purpose which means you must have that principle intact first. Introduce and familiarize your horse with the ball BEFORE attempting to play the game. Do this first on the ground before mounted. Don’t force a scared horse which can result in injury. Make your focus more on the relationship with your horse rather than winning the game. Refrain from aggressive handling which should be grounds for dismissal.
- Remember, you are playing at your own risk. Equine activities are inherently dangerous in any form.
